O manganeso é un elemento químico de número atómico 25 e símbolo Mn. Pertence ó grupo dos metais de transición.

O manganeso é un metal de transición branco grisáceo, semellante ao ferro. É un metal duro e moi fráxil, refractario e facilmente oxidable. O manganeso metal pode ser ferromagnético, pero só despois de sufrir un tratamento especial.

Os seus estados de oxidación más comúns son +2, +3, +4, +6 y +7, aínda que atopáronse dende +1 a +7; os compostos nos que o manganeso presenta estado de oxidación +7 son axentes oxidantes moi enérxicos. Dentro dos sistemas biolóxicos, o catión Mn⁺² compite frecuentemente co Mg⁺². Emprégase sobre todo aleado con ferro en aceiros e noutras aleacións.
