Cutter selection Part-2
Following on last introduction of end mill selection, now we continue to introduce the classification of cutter shape and application.

There are square end mill, side cutter, angle cutter, shape cutter, end mill, T-slot cutter, semi-moon key seat cutter, dovetail cutter , as well as face milling cutter.

  1. Plain milling cutter: Make cutting edge from a cylindrical rod to mill the plane of work piece, that we called flat cutter .. a cutting flute parallel to axis which is proper for light milling, because all the chips will be into the chip slot which will make the cutter beat, it is not suitable for heavy cutting ..) diagram and (c) diagram of the cutting edge of the spiral can have more than one cutting edge contact with the face milling cutting situation, so it’s more stable ..) diagram of the spiral angle have a better cutting effect since its helix is bigger, and it may reduce the milling vibration, resulting in a smooth surface, it can be used in heavy cutting or machining hard materials ..) helix angle is smaller, which is suitable for cutting middle amount of milling or fine cutting surface of work piece.

  2. Side milling cutter: Side cutter names from its side with cutting edge, divided into flat side milling cutter, hemi-cutter, staggered blade side cutter and interlocking side cutter four types according to the distribution of blades, as below, The flat side milling cutter (as shown in (a)) with edges in circumference and both sides of the blade can be used to slot, mill plane and ride milling. Hemi-cutter (as shown (b) below) with edges on the circumference and single side, which is good for heavy milling.. the blade could be on the left or right, so if the left and right side of the cutter, in the middle set a flat cutter, you can make milling work. Turn staggered cutting edge on both sides of the surface, said helix angle relative staggered blade side cutter (see the (c) below), allows milling force to reduce vibration and beat, always used in high-speed groove and deep feed milling. The following diagram (d) shows the interlocking side cutter, combine the left and right side of the cutter and the blades of both sides is also relatively, which axial thrust offset each other to do right groove milling work .

  3. Angular cutter: Cutting edge is neither parallel nor perpendicular to the cutter axis called the angle cutters .. unilateral angle cutters and bilateral angle cutters, as shown below, used for milling angular surfaces, such as the V-shaped groove slot, serrated, beveled and hinged blade teeth.
    Unilateral angle cutters cutting edge cutting edge of the cone surface, flat on the cutting edge is the cutter cone into perspective, but also in the left or right side (as shown in a) .. term point of view; bilateral angle cutters, cutting edge on the two intersect the cone on both sides of the angle can be equal or not equal (as shown below (b) below) .. edge angle are equal while the angle of the size of the call.

  4. Metal slitting saw: For milling slots or cutting metal, shown as below:

  5. Formed cutter: According to shape of cutting edge, milling its the opposite shape of the work piece, suitable for mass production, shown three popular types as below:

  6. End mill: Cutting edge on the face and on the periphery of the end mill. Just like drill bit and erection of flat end mills, hence it is often used in milling plane, groove, and contour.
  7. T-slot cutter: Cutting edges in the both sides and the circumferential surface, and has a standard taper shank into the connector then put into the spindle .. cutters or side cutters milling a vertical slot on the work piece, and then use the T-slot cutters at the bottom milling to create a wide horizontal slot, it’s the T-slot.

  8. Woodruff keyseat cutter: Similar to the side milling cutter, but only with cutting edges on the circumferential surface, and it has a handle, used for milling half-moon shape key set of work piece.

  9. Dovetail milling cutter: For machining dovetail set and groove.

  10. Face milling cutter: Face milling cutter is much like the sets of shell-side cutter, face milling cutter diameter 150 nm or more sets of rods mounted in the milling machine spindle mouth, face milling cutter for milling flat similar to its work planer .. knife circle cutter for milling work on the plane cutter for fine cut light repair work.

Conclusion:

  • General cutter materials and usage occasion as follows
    1. High-speed steel cutters:for general purposes, the most widely used.
    2. Carbide cutter:for high speed cutting.
    3. Non-ferrous metal casting alloy cutter:suitable for heavy cutting.

研磨特性:

  • 硬脆材料的研磨
    • 微小破碎痕跡構成的無光澤面。
    • 磨粒不是作用於鏡面而是作用在有凸凹和裂紋等處的表面上,並產生磨屑。
  • 金屬材料的研磨
    • 表面沒有裂紋。
    • 對於鋁材等軟質材料,研磨時有很多磨粒被壓入材料內;對刀具和塊規等淬火工具鋼等可確保有塊規那樣的光澤表面。

拋光

拋光工作方式:

  • 使用<1μm的微細磨粒
  • 軟質材料拋光墊:瀝青、石蠟、合成樹脂和人造革等。
  • 微小的磨粒被拋光器彈性地夾持研磨工件。因而,磨粒對工件的作用力很小,即使拋光脆性材料也不會發生裂紋。

研磨特性:

  • 由磨粒進行的機械拋光可塑性地生成切屑。但是它僅利用極少磨粒強制壓入產生作用。
  • 借助磨粒和拋光器與工件流動摩擦使工件表面的凸因變平。
  • 在加工液中進行化學性溶析。
  • 工件和磨粒之間有直接的化學反應而有助於上述現象。

Cutter selection
Only correct type and cutting edge may do a good job for milling work. Popular end mills include flat cutter, side cutter, face milling cutter, milling cutter, end mill, sawing, and milling cutter. Its characteristics is that many teeth and flutes on one milling cutter, some end mills with only two or three teeth; some cutters are with considerable numbers of teeth. Hence end mill is called as multi-teeth cutters.

There are many types of cutters and a variety of classification methods as below:

Classify by material:
  1. High-speed steel cutters:for general purposes, the most widely used.
  2. Carbide cutter:for high speed cutting.
  3. Non-ferrous metal casting alloy cutter:suitable for heavy cutting.
Classify by the way of grinding wheel:
  1. Contour cutter.
  2. Type cutter.
Classify by tool installation:
  1. Spindle cutter device:set cutter by use of the tool axis, which with a hole in the center of milling cutter, and used in horizontal milling machine.
  2. Shank type milling cutter:cutter body with straight shank or taper shank, it needs to be fixed by a chuck or socket for installation.
  3. Face Mills:This cutter is with a short cutter shaft, it needs to be settled by cutter shaft device then set on the spindle of milling machine directly for installation.
Classify by cutter structure:
  1. Overall cutter:body and cutting edge made by the same material as a whole, generally adopt high-speed steel.
  2. Brazed cutter:cutting blade made with carbide, the body is high carbon steel, combined by brazed joint.
  3. Welding blade cutter: cutting blade made with high carbon steel or tool steel, high-speed steel, ontology Ministry both to weld joints.
  4. Inlay cutter:blade screwed on the body, you can remove it to grind or replace, mostly used in face milling cutter of big diameter.

There are many processing methods to make metal, cutting is the major one among them.

At first, we should think about cutting tools around us.

Four major cutting method:

  1. Precision micro turning
  2. Precision micro milling
  3. Precision micro fly cut
  4. Precision micro drilling
There are precision micro turning tools,flat end mills, ball end mill, throwing cutter, and drills according to these applications. The working conditions, friction, impact, and cutting resistance are much worse because of the limitation of size, which is different from normal spec tools.

Basic requirements for miniature cutters:

  1. Small work piece and micro machining part In order to fit the characteristics of tiny machining, high machining accuracy and avoid interference between the work piece and the cutter, the whole work piece and the machining scale must be synchronized reduced.
  2. Sharp cutting edge Under micro cutting conditions, in order to achieve a very small amount of material removed, the depth of cut and feed rate is usually in the micron level, the cutting edge should be sharp enough.
  3. Good quality of surface Surface quality influences the performance of the micro-cutting tools a lot, poor surface quality will not only increase the frictional resistance and lead to the deterioration while fine cutting, but also weaken the toolstrength.
  4. Good quality of surface Rotary tools like the small diameter of end mills and drills, micro-cutting is carried out under high spindle speed.The cutting part of cutters should have sufficient strength and dynamic characteristics, which are able to afford the high impact load.
  5. Rigid, anti-deformation ability To ensure working accuracy, miniature cutters should have higher rigidity to reduce the deformation and rebound under cutting force.
  6. Good wear resistance, average wear process The cutting part of the micro cutting tools should have enough hardness to ensure its abrasion resistance.Blunt cutter will not only affect its machining accuracy, but also happen processing glitches which will bring difficulty of surface finishing.
  7. High accuracy of dynamic balance The run out feed rate of micro cutter is significantly greater than cutting for normal size... Under high spindle speed, the cutting edge between the cutting load is very uneven, the cutting force fluctuation is serious, the tip trajectory and accuracy of processing, the tiny end mills, drills and other rotary tool should have high accuracy of dynamic balancing.
  8. Accurate and reliable tool clamping Small rotary tool installation error is the main factor to influence the machining accuracy and reliability. The tool clamping system should have high contact rigidity, accuracy of repeating position, and good speedy locking.

Material of micro cutters

It is a very important mean to choose the advanced and applicable tool material, which may ensure the whole performance of micro tools .. The ideal materials for miniature cutters are diamond, fine grain and ultra-fine grain carbide.

  1. Plain Milling Cutter Plain Milling Cutter-Characteristics and processing differences of the four kinds of cutting tools : Plain Milling Cutter, End Mill, Side Milling Cutter, and Face Milling Cutter
    Plain Milling Cutter is the most commonly used tool in a horizontal milling machine. Plain Milling Cutter’s shape is like disc or cylindrical, which has blades on the outer circumference of the cutter for milling the plane which parallel to the cutter axis. The blade shapes include straight and helical blade-shaped. Generally helical blade shape is more commonly used. If the blade width is less 20mm, it is only suitable for light milling and milling hard materials because of its multi blades and small chip slots; if the width is over 20mm, it’s often designed as helical teeth in order to reduce the shear force and prevent vibration during milling, with fewer blades, so the chip slot is larger which is suitable for heavy milling and cutting soft materials.

    Such cutters have a flute in the circumferential surface and the end for milling flat, face, shoulder angle and groove .There are straight shank, taper shank, straight flute, helical flute, double flute, multi-flute, and so on.

    The shape of the side milling cutter is similar to the straight flute face cutter. Staggered teeth may be offset against each other and reduce vibration during machining, which is suitable for heavy milling.

    Face milling cutter is a disc-shaped, with cutting blades around the body and the side face. Such cutter is specialized in cutting larger plane. The blade face is wider, and the cutter body is made of general tool steel, then embedded high-speed steel or carbide blade.

Tungsten steel cutter,super hard alloy cutter?

Cutting Tools: What’s the difference among tungsten carbide, tungsten steel cutter, and super hard alloy cutter?
There are many kinds of different milling cutters. It may be divided into three categories as below according to its applications.
In fact, they are saying the same tool. The component is tungsten carbide (WC) and took part in the P type, M type, and K type. Micro grain carbide tool is made of tungsten carbide and adding some elements to to increase the hardness and abrasion resistance. Super hard alloy cutting tools is named by Japanese, which is also tungsten carbide cutter.
P, M, and K types are divided according to the different turning material.
  • P-type (most common) is suitable for turning mild steel, medium carbon steel, high carbon steel ....
  • K type is suitable for turning of high hardness materials such as cast iron, high-speed steel (HSS) or heat treated material....
  • M type is between the P and, K types which is suitable for difficult material or higher tensile strength material such as tin, hydraulic rod ....
Drill cutter and lathe tool depend on cutting volume.
HSSis suitable to produce drill bit cutters. Tungsten carbide is suitable for small cutting amount, good surface roughness or cutting high hardness material.
Turning tools mostly adopt tungsten carbide material, which is rarely used HSS material, unless for special purposes only!
Tungsten carbide steel is low cost, which applicable range is wider. But in some traditional industries, like automobile/motorcycle industries, pick only one type from P,K, and M type. .. but it is not suitable for optical and optoelectronic industry. Those industries mostly require a high surface roughness (mirror finishing) and the shape accuracy of the tool. Hence the basic knowledge of the diamond tool is very important. The general schools have detailed theory only for HSS high speed steel, tungsten steel tool and cutting tool. But we only know and learn the application and characteristics of diamond toolafter we enter into the community.Not only tungsten carbide or the HSS material, but also you can consider the CBN cutters or diamond tools for non-ferrous metals, the benefits are reducing tool change time and its superior performance and tool life.

木材切削用圓鋸片在精準度要不會求太過嚴謹,但要注意,雖圓鋸片在公差規範內,若機台偏差或加工參數不當等因素,仍會造成加工NG,所以造成工件毀損不是單一面向,所以除了要求圓鋸片公差品質外,更要注意可能造成偏差的因素,盡量避免。

鎢鋼圓鋸片偏差小細節要注意:

  1. 內孔前磨:內孔需研磨降低表面粗糙度,這樣與機台軸心(無心研磨至鏡面)密和度高,偏差值低。
  2. 圓鋸片本身鋼板不夠平整問題:鋼板本身隨著外徑越大其平面研磨時,偏差值就越大,在要求精密切割時,精準度就會受到影響。
