日本產業技術綜合研究所奈米碳管應用研究中心飯島澄男中心主任、長谷 川雅孝物質塗佈組組長等所組成的研究團隊，開發出在400℃的低溫下、高速製造薄片狀碳素材料—石墨薄膜(grapheme) 的新技術；而以往製造石墨薄膜則必須使用1000度C的高溫。為了要達到低溫製造的目標，研究團隊以「Roll-to-Roll」連續加工方式來製造，生 產速度提高100倍，在美日韓之間對於石墨薄膜實用化的激烈競爭下，研究團隊如同手握一張強而有力的王牌。
石 墨薄膜目前是朝著取代液晶面板及觸控面板電極材料中、使用稀有金屬的銦錫氧化物(ITO)為方向進行應用研究，要如何提升產量為一大課題。韓國三星電子等 預計兩年後要達到液晶面板電極方面的實用化目標。 產業綜合研究所則以化學、液晶業者為對象，招募共同研究夥伴，朝實用化目標急速邁進。
研究團隊應用原理是形成鑽石薄膜所使用的微波電漿輔助化學氣相沉積法(Microwave plasma-assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition, MPCVD)。在裝滿甲烷(methane)、氬氣(argon)，微量的氫氣的裝置中放置銅箔基板，並施加與微波爐相同週波數2.45GHz的微波使其 產生電漿，銅箔表面就可生成石墨薄膜。
微波是透過石英濾片打到銅箔上，微波在石英裡面擴散，在周圍便產生多數的電漿，店將可抑制微波直接接觸銅箔所產生的高溫，可達到300度C左右的低溫化目標。
研究團隊以小型化觸控面板進行動作確認的實驗，也嘗試將製作石墨薄膜的銅箔捲成數十公尺並同時由反方向捲起成品、減 少搬運動作的「捲對捲(Roll-to-Roll)」法製造裝置的試作。經實驗證實，經過三十秒微波照射後便可製造出A4大小的石墨薄膜，如果條件經過優 化，就能夠提升品質，希望能夠於2010年底達到代替ITO使用之目標。
